NZ Classification –BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) is a Prescription Medicine, administered only by trained healthcare professionals. Each vial of BOTOX® contains 100 units (U) of botulinum toxin type A as a haemagglutinin complex. BOTOX® injection is used to temporarily improve the appearance of upper facial lines (including frown lines, crow’s feet and horizontal forehead lines), and continuous vertical bands (platysma muscle) connecting the jaw and neck. BOTOX® treatment has risks and benefits. Contraindicated in people with myasthenia gravis or Eaton Lambert Syndrome and should not be used in areas with infection. Cautions: people with pre-existing neuromuscular disorders, hypersensitivity reactions, pregnancy, or lactation. Common side effects for upper facial lines treatment include, but not limited to: injection-site pain, redness, swelling, or bruising; skin tightness/feeling of tension; headache; flu-like symptoms; nausea; drooping eyelids or eyebrows. Common side effect for platysma is weakness in the lower part of the face. For most cosmetic patients, side effects are usually temporary and limited to where BOTOX® was injected. Uncommon but serious side effects include difficulty swallowing or breathing. Discuss further with your healthcare professional about the benefits/risks of this procedure or if you have concerns or side effects.
